Match reporter Becko In the bleak midsummer
Burnley 1 Wrexham 4
Report by Becko

Let's not get too down, it's only a friendly.

Hmmm. Well beaten by a team who were two divisions below us last year. Nothing's really changed. We looked OK going forward, Blake and Little were prominent, and Ian Moore ran his socks off as usual. However the non-existent midfield and sieve-like defence remain.

Mr Kilby promised 10 new players before the season; Stan said we would have 5 or 6 in addition to the 4 signed by the time we went to the Isle of Man, and so far they haven't materialised. It's proving more difficult than we thought to sign these players. Hopefully in the next few days we'll see the squad added to with quality players, or the winter promises to be worse, far worse, than last year.

So what about the new signings? Well, we needed a keeper, and it looks like we still do. On the 90 minutes seen, The Beast, Hulk, or Bulk didn't impress. The jury's still out on Lee Roche, but I do wonder why we signed a right back when we have two already at the club. Mo Camara did look both 'up for it' and quick - he was the one bright spark of the evening - but he is older than Lee Briscoe, who we've released. As for the trialists, forget them: and that's as worrying as signing so few new players, if that's the calibre and the pedigree of the type of player we can attract. To put it bluntly, the centre of midfield and the centre of defence must have four new players in it sooner rather than later.

What about the game? Ian Moore scored inside the first minute with an overhead kick after confusion in the Wrexham box, but that was as good as it got. Defensive errors and free headers meant it was all too easy for Wrexham. We did have chances in the second half, but you won't be surprised to hear we tried to walk the ball into the net.

Last season I was confident we wouldn't go down; as it stands I can't see too many teams finishing below us. Let's hope there's at least three.

If you're interested, Burnley lined up as follows:

Jensen

Roche

Richard

Branch (C)

Camara

West

Weller

Grant

Little

Antoine-Curier

Moore I

Subs: Blake for Weller (30), O'Neill for Grant (56), Gnohere for Antoine-Curier (45).
Sub not used: Delaney.
