1991/1992 a London Clarets' assessment Quite simply this will go down as the season when Jimmy Mullen transformed the club from a shambles into Fourth Division champions. Mullen was like a breath of fresh air, mostly playing an attractive attacking style using two wide players. The team responded superbly. The forwards, led by the always improving and clinical Conroy, simply revelled in the amount of chances created. Eli at his marauding best was outstanding in many games, Lancashire even more so, particularly during October. The wide players, Francis, Harper and latterly, Painter, delivered consistently dangerous balls, with Francis pace a constant threat to the opposition, while his lack of a good first touch was a constant threat to my blood pressure. In midfield, Deary and Farrell, often outnumbered, were industrious and largely taken for granted. Both scored crucial goals in the closing games. Measham and Jakub were rock solid at full back, Pender equally so at the heart of the defence, his captaincy improving as the season progressed. We also had the chance to witness the excellence in goal of Andy Marriott and Nicky Walker, sadly both only on loan. Against this there was the complete deterioration in the form of Chris Pearce. But most of all we had Steve Davis, arguably the best player in the division. His confidence on those long, surging runs, his strength and assurance in defence, his overall calmness under pressure made him a class act. Once again we can be proud to be a supporter of Burnley Football Club. This is not just because we won the Fourth Division, but because we did it well and undoubtedly we have one man more than any other to thank for this. I drink to Jimmy Mullen. Woody |
