Your Wimbledon report talks of 1,700 Clarets attending the match. Let’s say each spent £25 on ticket, programme and refreshments. We are subsidising Wimbledon Football club with 1,700 x £25 = £42,500.
In return, 307 Wombles made the trip North to the Moor, so 307 x £25= £7,700.
This is not just a Wimbledon phenomenon, but applies to most opponents in the division, with the exception of a few teams, such as the blue Mancs.
There are some games where we have circa 4,000 Clarets giving the away club, say at £25 per head, £100k in revenue. Some respond with a measly 200 fans, giving us an income of £5k.
The stupidity of this was made apparent to me at the Millwall New Den game, where the home fans subjected us to a barrage of coins and intimidation, after taking the Clarets' circa £60k. Is this justice? Then the other night they had the cheek to go above us!
How can we justify helping other clubs in this manner? How many Clarets were at Sheffield Wednesday for our opening game of the season? How many Hillsboroughians (?) will make the trip to Burnley this weekend? They can afford Kuqi and we can’t!
I can justify my visit to Sellout Park for the game because I got complimentary tickets for the players’ lounge. It meant I had to sit with Wombles and couldn’t shout and sing, but there was not much singing to be done on Saturday anyway.
Burnley would definitely benefit from a share of the away gate, but the current system means the home team keep the whole gate receipt.
You may not like ITV Sport, but by missing a few away games, you could afford to subscribe and not put money into our opposition’s coffers!
Come on you Clarets!
