Although this pub is a couple of miles outside the town centre, it's worth finding.
Situated close to Barden Mill, and the Leeds and Liverpool Canal, car or taxi is the best way to find the pub.
Travel along Colne Road towards Nelson, and turn left at Duke Bar onto Barden Lane, signposted for Fence.
Just before Barden Mill and under the railway bridge the pub is on the right-hand side. Don't be put off by the
bleak stone exterior, or the Whitbread signs - once inside you will find a pleasant, comfortable and friendly pub.
There is ample car parking at the rear of the pub, and if you enter by the back door you will go through a small
lobby into an open-plan lounge area. It is clear that the pub caters for diners.
The menu is full of traditional home-cooked fare at very reasonable prices. I would think
this is a good place to eat before a night match, as long as you have transport to get you to
the ground.
If you enter from the front door, then the games room is to your left. Dominoes and darts
are played here, and there are several Burnley FC memorabilia items adorning the walls,
including signed shirts.
Two beers are available: Tetley Bitter, which we all know is not
the beer it used to be, and a guest. In the past I've had Fuller's London Pride, and Moorhouses Premier. More
recently, Wadworth IPA and
Charles Wells' Eagle IPA, both
unusual for the area, but both on fine
form. At about 3.6% they are both good session beers, and at well under £2 a pint they are good value
for money.
