A recent decoration and carpet fitting at this Burnley Wood local have transformed it into a pleasant, comfortable pub. Owned by Moorhouse's Burnley brewery, the pub is within easy reach of the town centre, and Turf Moor. Relatively quiet on matchdays, if you want a pint in less busy surroundings than most of the town centre pubs, this could be the pub for you.
If going to the pub from the town centre, it's easy enough to walk along Yorkshire Street, then turn right into Plumbe Street, and left into Oxford Road. Keep going for about half a mile up the hill, and the pub is on the left. From Manchester Road train station walk down Manchester Road, and right into Healy Wood Road. Keep going across each junction until you come to Oxford Road, then the pub is on your left.
Moorhouse Premier Bitter, and surprisingly, John Smith's, are the two real ales available. Black Cat proved to be unpopular, despite my attempts to drink as much of it as possible, so it's Premier for me at £1.40 a pint.
The pub has a simple layout. One entrance, and two rooms. To the left is the main lounge, where there is wall seating and bar stools. To the right is the tap room with satellite TV, dartboard, and a recent addition in the form of a table football game.
All in all this is now a tidy pub, and with the beer invariably in fine form is well worth seeking out.
