We're all too familiar with the depressing sight of Thwaites pubs in Burnley town centre that are devoid of real ale, so it's refreshing to visit The Coaching House in Glen View Road on the outskirts of town. Thwaites bitter at £1.80, in fine form, makes this a pub worth making the effort to visit.

Built in the past 20 years, it has a modern feel whilst exhibiting a traditional look to it. Buses do travel there from the town centre - it is too far to walk - but if you don't have your own transport, a taxi shouldn't be too dear.

One long bar with plenty of nooks and crannies with seating means you can have a quiet chat without feeling everyone can overhear you. Food is available at reasonable prices, and there is a more formal eating area at the end of the bar. This is closed off, so has a restaurant feel to it. A big screen is available for sporting occasions, when the pub gets full.

Many argue that Thwaites is not the beer it once was - but at least you get the chance to decide yourself at The Coaching House.
