Head up Manchester Road from the town centre, and in about ten minutes you arrive at the canal bridge, where you will find The Inn on the Wharf.

Now, I know that Hardys & Hansons beers aren't everyone's favourite, and they take a bit of getting used to; but it's real ale, and a very rare outlet for the Nottinghamshire brewery in this part of the world.

The main criticism is that the beer is too cold. However, with the hot weather we've had recently, I'm not complaining.

A fine stone building with outside seating to the rear on the canal towpath gives this pub a feel of the countryside, whilst being very near to the town centre.

Food is big business at The Inn on the Wharf, with a varied menu which can be a bit pricey. However it's worth it, because it's not just your standard pub fare.

There are three beers on, including the best bitter, which is a fruity beer priced at £1.87; Ye Olde Trip, which is a permanent fixture at 4.3% ABV; and a seasonal beer from their range. August's offering is Frolicking Farmer, and was in fine form when I tasted it.
