Situated about halfway along Accrington Road, about three-quarters of a mile from Junction 10 of the M65. Effectively this is the Brewery Tap, being across the road from Moorhouse's Brewery. This is the best of Moorhouse's four Burnley pubs, serving Black Cat, Premier and Pendle Witch at £1.50, £1.60 and £1.70 respectively.
The pub is named after General Sir James Yorke Scarlett (1799-1871). He adopted Burnley as his home after being called here to quell the mill riots. Famous for leading the Charge of the Heavy Brigade at Balaclava during the Crimean War, he stood as a Conservative candidate at the first General Election in 1864, and when he died it is reputed 60,000 people lined the route from Bank Hall to Cliviger, where he is buried. Pictures and details of him adorn the walls of the pub, together with Burnley FC pictures, and mirrors.
It's a single-roomed pub, but with a small seated area to the right through the front (and only) entrance. Walled seating to the left in front of the bar leads to a games area, where darts and pool are regularly played. The pub certainly has a community feel to it, and could accurately be described as a 'no frills' local. A fair number of people drink the real ale, and even the Black Cat sells enough from what I've seen when in there. I usually go for this myself, and haven't been disappointed.
Regular brewery trips take place, and on my last visit, Blackpool Fylde and Wyre CAMRA were enjoying their pie and peas (and three pints) after being shown round the brewery. They presented Moorhouse's with a trophy for Pride of Pendle, which was voted 'beer of the Fleetwood Festival' this year. It's good to see Moorhouse's being highly regarded elsewhere; it's a pity so many Burnley people don't realise the quality of the beer they are missing.
