Situated approximately half way down Briercliffe Road,
and thus in the middle of the
second best pub crawl in town, this pub is a good honest local.
Bought by Hyde's Manchester Brewers from Bass
(as they were then) in 1992, along with the Grey Mare at Gannow Lane, it's just another example of the large
number of varied beers on offer in the town.
Regrettably only the Traditional Bitter is available, but as anyone who has ever drunk it knows, it is a true
session beer at 3.8% and has a good bitter aftertaste. The price of a pint has just gone up by 5 pence to £1.69,
but it compares favourably with the rest of the pubs on Briercliffe Road, and is cheaper than most if not all in the
town centre.
The pub is bigger than it looks from the outside, situated at the end of a row of cottage / terraced properties,
and still retains many original features, the tiled lobby being one. Over the years, it looks like the rooms have been
knocked through into one large room, which is a shame, but there is still the pool room which is to your immediate right
when you come through the porch entrance. There is a beer garden at the back of the pub - not that the weather is
really up to sitting in it at the moment
Karaoke and a disco dominate at weekends, and the pub is busy. They have a team in the local pool league, and even
a piano, should anyone feel inclined.
Briercliffe Road is about two miles from the town centre, so transport is essential. Fortunately there is an
excellent bus service running every half an hour so its easy enough to both reach, and find.
