Apparently this is Lees'
only East Lancs outlet, and thinking about it you don't see Lees as a guest beer often, so if you like the malty dry
taste of their bitter then this is the place to go. Regrettably the distinctive smooth tasting GB mild is not available,
but don't let that put you off; there's little else to complain about in this popular busy town centre pub.
Unless £1.50 a pint is too much, that is, or pie and peas at lunch for £1, or a pub that stays open until 1am at
weekends is not your cup of tea.
It is basically a one-room pub with a large dance floor in the middle, and seating round the side.
It doesn't sound like anything to write home about, but atmosphere and friendliness ensure that whenever you go
in there you won't feel uncomfortable. If you want a late night drink at the weekend and you want it
to be a decent drink, then there's only the Garden Bar or the Sparrow Hawk
to recommend.
There is another room down steps to the left of the bar, called the Function Room. This room can get busy,
but more often than not you can have a good chat, or play pool.
If you go in there during the day, or early evening, it has the feel of a local. At night - and particularly
on Fridays and Saturdays - many students and the local gay community make the pub much more lively,
and the disco is not so loud that you can't be heard.
Without doubt a fine pub, and yet another example of the varied beers on offer in our town.
