Charity Shield triumph at Maine Road

I recall quite clearly the goal that won the Charity Shield. It was from a set-piece which I’d seen Burnley try quite often with some success during the Jimmy Adamson reign. Burnley had won a free-kick on the right-hand edge of the Manchester City penalty area, and Doug Collins was about to take it. Most of Burnley’s attackers had concentrated at the far post with their markers. When Collins was satisfied with everyone’s position, he took a long run-up and as the attackers moved towards goal, everyone was tense with expectation. At the end of his run-up, he stepped over the ball. The crowd groaned. The players sighed. The Burnley forwards with attendant defenders had now moved to the near post. The goal, barring the goalkeeper, was now exposed. Suddenly Colin Waldron, who had been lurking on the left-hand edge of the area came running in, marked by Mike Doyle. Collins was still standing near the ball and he chipped it into the goalmouth. Waldron then dived to head it in. A brilliant goal! The whole plan was, I presume, a deliberate ploy designed to upset the defenders. Superb – and it was televised.
