I have recently come across two instances where people, well respected in football, have been most complimentary about Burnley F.C.
The first was on the video ‘Yesterday’s Cigarette Card Heroes' (Trans Video Productions – if you love the game, beg, steal or buy a copy), where several star footballers of the past are interviewed for their recollections. One such interview was probably the last carried out with the great Tommy Lawton, and this includes some reminiscences of his time, as a young boy, with Burnley. He expresses great gratitude to the Club and, in particular, to Ray Bennion, for the help and advice which he received, and which stood him in good stead for his international career. He also pays a great tribute to Tom Clegg, chairman for many years, and Clegg’s determination, when Lawton was about to be transferred, that he should not go to Wolves, for reasons which Lawton graphically explains.
The other was in the book, ‘Fathers, Sons and Football’ written by Colin Schindler (published by Headline Book Publishing). This book is about the trials and tribulations as professional footballers of three members of the Summerbee family – George (father), Mike (son), and Nicky (grandson). There are some pretty harsh words said about football management, in particular about Preston North End’s treatment of George, pre- and post-War. However, Mike is unstinting in his praise and admiration for Burnley FC, including its management and, in particular, its supporters.
Both these instances confirm the affection which is prevalent throughout the football world regarding our club.
