Scouser on the Wing
A tribute to David Eyres

I received the following anonymously from someone who is obviously a fan of David Eyres and, like the rest of us, was sad to see him go - Cozzo.

Goodbye David Eyres
Though I only met you the once.
You had the pace to hold your own
While fullbacks around you crawled.
They crawled out of the area
And they cut you down again.
They put you on the stretcher
And they made you miss a game.

And it seems to me you played your game
Like a scouser on the wing.
Never knowing who you crossed to
When the ball came in.
And we would have liked to keep you
But it was just the bid.
Your legs had burned out long before
Your effort never did.

Being wing back was tough,
The toughest role you ever played.
Turf Moor created a superstar
And PNE was the price you paid.
Even now you’ve left
The fans are still proud of you.
But all the papers had to say
Was that Eyresy was no longer good.

Goodbye David Eyres
Though I hardly knew you at all.
You had the wit to hold your own
While those around you stalled.

Goodbye David Eyres
From the woman in the Old Bob Lord,
Who sees you as something more than a footballer,
More than just ‘Ooh David Eyres’.
