The following
extract from the Guardian's excellent 'Fiver' service (www.footballunlimited.co.uk) might be of
interest to our readers:
"Parkes
Benched
Tonight Blackburn Rovers boss Tony Parkes will be buried deep inside the cavernous Ewood
Park library, looking up words in a dictionary. Words such as "caretaker"
(definition: a managerial position when held by Tony Parkes) and "full-time"
(definition: the employment status of every manager in football. Except Tony Parkes). He
may look up other words too, but the Fiver is a family publication.
And who can blame Mr Parkes when, according to this morning's papers, his job has been
offered to former Southampton and Torino boss Graeme Souness only a few months after he
signed a contract with Rovers until the end of the season? In another eerie coincidence
Bruce Rioch, former Arsenal boss and oft-mentioned candidate for the Rovers hotseat, has
today resigned as manager of First Division make-weights Norwich City. Would you believe
it?
Rovers themselves are not revealing whether they believe it or not. Like all smart clubs
they have refused to comment on "media speculation". Which means the Fiver will
have to do it for them. Ahem. If things go to form, the pathetically supported but
well-endowed Lancashire club will recruit either Souness or Rioch as their new manager.
They will dutifully spend £20m on new players. They will not achieve very much with this
money. They will be sacked. Then Tony Parkes will step in as, erm, caretaker. Simple,
isn't it?....."
Makes me laugh!
