Burnley pub news
Every so often our resident drinker-about-town Becko will offer a round-up of what's new
in Burnley boozers.
May 2002
The Waggoners Inn
Situated past the Summit on Manchester Road, it's changed hands for the first time in 17 years. A John Smiths pub which focuses heavily on food, it does serve real ale. This should continue.
The Town Mouse
Not a pub I get to a lot, but it has been advertising Old Speckled Hen at £1.50 a pint. Not my favourite beer, but at least it's available real ale.
The Ministry of Ale
Your new favourite pub is now brewing a mild. Dark Star at 3.4% ABV is the best produced so far. £1.40 a pint, which may be reduced in the wake of last month's budget!

The Garden Bar
This regular CAMRA Good Beer Guide entry, selling Lees Bitter,
has now been granted a Special Hours Certificate, entitling it to open until 1am from Thursday until Saturday.

The Dugdale Arms
In 1999 this pub was in The Good Beer Guide until Thwaites, whose commitment to real ale is at best questionable, decided to replace real with smooth. Well, real ale is again available, so get it while you can.

The George IV
Further down Padiham Road, The George is selling Moorhouses Black Cat at £1.35. A pity it's only available in one Moorhouses pub in Burnley - The General Scarlett.

The Duke of York
As reported last month, The D.O.Y. was opening imminently. Well, it has, and a good refurb has been done. It's doing a good trade, but disappointingly real ale is conspicuous by its absence.

Litten Tree
Rumours circulating around suggest that the Safeway site at the Centenary Way / Church Street / Cat's Whiskers Roundabout is going to be developed into a Litten Tree outlet. I'm not sure who owns these outlets, but they are very much food orientated in the Wetherspoon's and Orange House mould. That said, I know the Litten Tree in Rochdale sells real ale.

Moorhouse's Brewery
Burnley's number one brewery is brewing two seasonal ales: an Easter brew at 4.6% and a Golden Ale for the Queen's Jubilee, which I understand will be a 6% offering.

The Sparrow Hawk
Best wishes to Steve and Julia, who have sold out. I understand Steve has not been too well since selling, so get well soon. It was all announced pretty quickly, but I understand they have been looking to sell for about 18 months. There was a farewell private party on Sunday 17th February. No changes are expected - why change a good thing?

The Brun Lea
The Wetherspoon's pub opened on Monday 25th February.
Not a particularly inspiring selection of beers: Boddingtons, Theakstons, Spitfire, Courage Directors.
Pendle Witch was on, but no sign of the infinitely superior Black Cat or Premier. Competitive prices, of course.
We may get some better choices in future.

The White Hart
Everards Tiger and Beacon seem to be regular beers in
this Mitchell owned pub now. Beware - Sunday night is Karaoke night.

The Shepherds
This pub has reopened on Cog Lane. A good refurbishment, but no real ale.
The Duke of York
Work seems to be going on forever on this burnt out pub. No news on when it's likely to reopen, but a sign says it's owned by Avebury Taverns. The Good Beer Guide tells us Avebury Taverns has a choice of 50 cask ales and a commitment to micro-brewers' products to satisfy local tastes. Let's see.

The Wellington
This has reopened but doesn't appear to be selling real ale. This used to be a good boozer, but in need of refurbishment.

The Park View
Another pub up for sale. It only seems to be open at weekends, and is not busy. Still no real ale here to tempt us in.
