Spot the player

The following player assessments were made by a long-standing London Claret midway through the traumatic 1986/87 season. Your task is to put the correct player against the appropriate assessment.

1 ‘Improved on last season. Now only reasonably poor and may improve with age.’

2 ‘Played in a variety of positions and shows a total lack of ability in any.’

3 ‘Plenty of effort and that’s the only redeeming feature.’

4 ‘He still makes bad mistakes but is the closest we have to a decent defender.’

5 ‘Our best chance of creating a goal but a lesson in crossing wouldn’t go amiss.’

6 ‘Has the mobility of a rampaging hippo.’

7 ‘Definitely worth a one year contract. Lack of pace is a problem but, hopefully, will develop into a useful player.’

8 ‘For a man of his talent he is desperately disappointing showing a distinct lack of interest.’

9 ‘Frustrating. One minute he looks a great player, the next, the ball is like a hot potato. Needs to improve his consistency.’

10 ‘Comes from the Chad Valley ‘up and under’ style of distribution.’

11 ‘How did he ever play in the First Division?’

12 ‘Considering his form before injury, a very disappointing return.’

13 ‘Despite his aerial supremacy he should have retired years ago.’

14 ‘An average Fourth Division player, who’s saved us on more than one occasion this season’.

15 ‘A promising youngster who can only benefit from experience.’

And the cast?

Choose from: a Joe Neenan, b Ian Britton, c Neil Grewcock, d Ray Deakin, e Billy Rodaway, f Leighton James, g Ashley Hoskin, h Phil Malley, i Steve Kennedy, j Derrick Parker, k Phil Murphy, l Peter Hampton, m Joe Gallagher, n Darren Heesom, o Peter Leebrook.

It took some believing that five members of this team played regular First Division football at earlier stages of their careers. Having said this, without the last ditch efforts of many named here we might not have had a club today.
