Time to be cautious
Why we shouldn't gamble on promotion

This time I have to disagree with many of your remarks about the Sheffield Wednesday game, though not about the game because I wasn't at it. The current Burnley side belong in the mid to lower regions of Nationwide Division One.

They have one class player, and that has been a necessary condition of their achievement in playing much closer to potential than have their rivals. Without him, as you know, their form is as relegation candidates. If you choose spending now as an option, we would need to spend £20m to get up and £50m to stay up. If we went up now we would either be humiliated or have to spend far more than the additional income.

Coventry, Nottingham Forest, Swindon, Sheffield Wednesday etc are in far worse condition than us and lower down
the league because they did the sort of thing you recommend. So - let's rejoice that we've avoided relegation and use the rest of the season to have a cup run, clear out the elderly and give a sustained opportunity to youth.

Actually I think Maylett and Papadopoulos are very talented players who haven't been given a chance. Even if we're going to sell them, they need a first team run (cf. the rather belated attempt to market Paul Smith last season). Uncle Stan is not always right, and he puts far too much faith in experience.

The Premiership is living death for many of the clubs in it, who hang on for years, eventually get relegated and have to hire a new squad with no money. When should we go up? Either when we've started actually producing some players, or we have a real sugar daddy (the Duke of Westminster would be in the right financial league, and he has a North Lancashire property at Abbeystead). Or both!
