The statistics said...

We beat Coventry City 1-0 at Highfield Road. Ian Cox headed our goal in the 35th minute.

Important - please note
We should point out that although we thought Burnley won the game on merit, it seems that this wasn't the case. Obviously, Coventry should have won - for one thing, they have "the best manager outside the Premiership" (according to the Observer, at least). Our victory - or, more accurately, Coventry's defeat, since Burnley's play didn't impact the game at all - was actually due to the following:

  • Coventry had "a few players away on international duty".
  • FIFA failed to give international clearance in time for 37-year-old midfielder Vincente Engonga to play. This was because Coventry are "an unfashionable club", and FIFA have total disregard for them.
  • Coventry had "a good shout for a few penalties" during the game, but for some reason these weren't given.
  • Coventry's defending was "lapse", according to their official website. We think they mean "lax" - but it got us thinking that maybe City's pre-match team talk was similarly confused... ("Now, lads, I want you to go out and bin all three points.")
  • There was a six-day Placidus moon, waxing gibbous and with Taurus rising. Worse, Jupiter's Great Red Spot crossed the planet's central meridian during the first half of the game.
OK, so one of the above is clearly ridiculous. We acknowledge that Vincente Engonga wouldn't have made any difference. Sorry.

Our survey said...

Paddy:
A good response to last week's debacle. A hard-fought win. Well played, back four!

Katherine:
McAllister was the only Coventry player who did anything. It was a well-deserved win. PS Congratulations to Telford on their amazing 7-4 away win!

Joan:
A much better performance than last week's, and a well-deserved win.

Paul:
We won the game because for ninety minutes, we were first to the ball.

Kieron:
Mr Cox was absolutely superb, and Grant excelled himself. And Taylor is the best centre-forward in the division. And Dermot got slung out of the ground!

Barbara:
I enjoyed Taylor's highlights very much!

Joanne:
What has Gareth done to his hair?

John:
I'm sorry to strike a negative note, but what is the point of Alan Moore?

Woody:
I thought it was a poor quality game, but three hard-earned points.

Lee:
An excellent team performance. One hundred percent effort and commitment, and a well-deserved three points.

Phil:
Utterly satisfied!

Firmo:
What a relief to win away again. The difference today was that everybody (I exclude Alan Moore, obviously) got their foot in and harassed for the ball at every opportunity. We showed great attitude. But then we always beat Coventry, don't we? Remember how they patronised us in the FA Cup the other year? Ha ha ha ha ha!

Brent:
Gary McAllister, Philip Larkin, The Specials, Jimmy Hill, Mick Ferguson, Lady Godiva, the Luftwaffe: your boys took one hell of a beating.

Razor:
A poor game, but all Burnley players - without exception - gave their all, and we probably deserved the three points. Coventry were disappointing - too reliant on McAllister - and Burnley's sweat and effort proved sufficient to win the points.

Cozzo:
An excellent performance. Cox, Cook, Grant and Diallo were superb. The only player below par was Blake. The whole team were really up for it.

Pauline:
An enjoyable game, which I thought we just deserved to win on the balance of play and as the away side. I thought Coventry were disappointing, but Burnley played well - especially compared to last Saturday!

Poll of the day

How it works: Our Chairman highlights a key issue from the day, and each London Claret present at the post-match inquest casts one vote. Today's poll saw 15 votes cast.

Question: Forgetting about Wigan, who are sure to be promoted, which team would you most like to see come up to Division One?

The result: 1 London Claret voted for Crewe (probably one of our railway buffs). Two voted for Oldham Athletic (something to do with David Eyres, we believe). Four voted for QPR (thinking about travel, obviously). But the runaway winner was Bristol City, with eight votes. Something to do with beer, apparently!

Pic of the day

What a beautiful sight!
