Burnley 2 Derby 0, Saturday 22nd February 2003
Two-goal Clarets leave Rams feeling sheepish

The statistics said...

We beat Derby County 2-0 at the Turf. Our goals came from Ian Moore (an eighth-minute shot from around eight yards, after good work by Alan Moore), and Golden Bonce (a close-range far post header off a delightful ball from Tony Grant). County fans probably wished they still had Chris Riggott and Malcolm Christie, who between them scored all the goals in Middlesbrough's 3-1 away win against Sunderland...

Our survey said...

Dermot:
The first-half display was absolutely excellent - we scored two goals, and could have scored more. In the second half, we contained Derby, without looking to score ourselves. Overall, another good performance.

Paul F:
We performed very well, especially in the first half. We didn't allow Derby anything - and they probably wouldn't have scored if they'd played until midnight. Roll on Wednesday!

Danny:
It was a superb first-half performance, and a solid second-half defensive performance. This gave us the three points, which overall we deserved.

Chris:
Burnley played well in the first half. Alan Moore, Paul Cook and Tony Grant were brilliant. Altogether a good first-half performance. The defence played well in the second half to give us the three points.

Dave:
An excellent first half, rewarded by two goals (which were admittedly the results of defensive mix-ups by Derby), allied to a solid defensive second-half performance. This equals my definition of a workmanlike three points! And Oliver, my nephew (aged 8) enjoyed it too!

Mike:
An excellent first half, with Alan Moore, Gareth Taylor and Tony Grant all playing very well. The second half was perhaps a little bit disappointing in comparison, but Drissa and Coxy were excellent again. It was good to see Taffy (Leighton James) back on the pitch. He's fifty now, so those of us who remember him playing are showing our ages! Lastly, it was as usual freezing cold, especially at Manchester Road station - and the train was late again!

Eric:
A very good first half; quite open, but we deserved to be 2-0 up at half-time. In the second half, we gave Derby quite a lot of possession, but Driss and Coxy were dominant and Derby never looked like getting back into the game. Even Tony Grant had a good game - sometimes you can forget he's there, but today he played well.

Derek (Derby):
I thought that Derby were poor today, particularly in defence. I felt that Ravanelli played reasonably well. At the end of the game we were sick to discover that Riggott had scored two goals, and Christie one, for Middlesbrough. As far as the Burnley team were concerned, I wasn't over-impressed. But I've enjoyed the day with the London Clarets.

Pete (Derby):
I thought that Derby were very, very poor. Burnley deserved the win. As far as John Gregory is concerned...can I let you know at the end of the season?! I think he could do better. A good day out with the London Clarets!

We'd like to thank Derek and Pete for contributing to our vox pop.

Poll of the day

How it works: A key issue from the day is highlighted, and each London Claret present at the post-match inquest casts one vote. Today's poll saw 11 votes cast (including 2 from Derby).

The question: In your opinion, will Burnley be in the play-offs come the end of the season?

The result: A paltry 3 voters responded in the affirmative. Over twice as many voters - 8 - were more pessimistic (realistic?), though one person pointed out that we won't be too bothered about the League if we win the FA Cup! And no prizes for guessing how Derek and Pete voted...
