Burnley 1 Ipswich Town 1, Saturday 11th January 2003
All square again with the Tractor Boys

The statistics said...

We drew 1-1 at the Turf with Joe Royle's in-form Ipswich. The Blues went ahead in the 22nd minute via Pablo Counago. Robbie Blake equalised from the penalty spot in the 66th minute. Our new signing, Drissa "Driss" Diallo, played the whole ninety minutes alongside TLC King Arthur in the centre of the Burnley defence.

Our survey said...

Paddy:
Today was a good game for Burnley in that we had six first-team players out, but still managed to get a point. Ipswich, with all their supposed stars, never looked like winning the game. A draw was a fair result, with di Branchio and Driss starring. The only criticism I have is that Stan didn't put Glen on Holland (who was playing in their defence).

Dermot:
We started very brightly, and created a number of opportunities. However, we failed to convert them, and found ourselves a goal down at half time. Ipswich started the second half very brightly, and created numerous opportunities to score. We then gradually came back into the game, scored with a penalty and had more opportunities at the end to win the game - but again, we failed to convert them. Overall, a draw seemed a fair result.

Mike:
A good result at the end; however, we need more practice at taking free kicks and corners. (But as Benny says, why change the habit of a lifetime? We've always been poor at them!) The new defender is quite quick. I saw Marlon in the coffee area in the Bob Lord stand at half time!

Woody:
I thought we were completely outplayed in the first half, and fortunate to be only one down, even though we'd managed to keep them at arm's length as far as shots on goal were concerned. Personally I would have sent Driss off by half time after two shocking challenges - at half time I thought we were lucky to have 11 men still on the field and to only be one goal down. In the second half we got a break with the penalty; the game opened up, and it could have gone either way. As always, our major problem is that our midfield is not up to the job. A point gained rather than two lost. PS Ipswich are the first team we've beaten on aggregate this season - via the away goals rule!

Joanne:
I said I'd never vote for Graham Branch as man of the match - but today I made history, and did! We played better than I expected, and I was pleased with a 1-1 draw. I thought that Driss played alright - perhaps he is a little lacking in match fitness, but he tried hard and showed potential.

Michael:
I had ten doughnuts between Peterborough and Grantham, and the eleventh in Halifax when I felt hungry again. The match? It was a draw. I was definitely there. A decent game of football, and a fair result. Sickening to see NTG back in goal, though.

Firmo:
I'm very happy with a point today. Ipswich were easily the better team in the first half. I could see what Joe Royle has done for them - they're fit, they're organised, and they crowd the man with the ball. It was a tactic that was 91% effective in the first half. I was really glad they gave away the penalty, because I couldn't see how we were going to score. After that, it turned into a really hopeless game between two inept sides. Either side could have won it, but neither of them deserved to.

The only thing the game lacked after the penalty was a slapstick comedy soundtrack - both Bents were hopeless in front of goal, while Papa put himself into the net instead of the ball. Regarding the new boy, Diallo: it's too soon to judge yet. I thought he looked basic but effective, bearing in mind that he made his debut in difficult circumstances. Undoubtedly, man of the match was Graham di Branchio. The worst player was the hopeless Alan Moore. Could we not just start with 10 men? It would be better. I was 91% happy with the result.

Hozzo:
With injuries and suspensions it was going to be a difficult match for Burnley. Little and Blake found it hard to get going. Ipswich were good coming forward from defence. Ian Moore caused many problems. Branch played well at the back again! Nicely taken penalty by Blake. A fair result. No new bear for the other three to meet this week!

Pauline:
I thought that I'd spent today at home sick - but apparently, I was at the Turf! The official attendance figure now includes season ticket holders etc who didn't actually go, and then there is another figure which takes account of the attendees who didn't actually attend! (Confused yet?) So, I am one of the 9% of attendees who didn't actually attend. Now, I'm all for stats in the right place, but this seems to be stats for the sake of it. It does explain why I can only remember 9% of the game, though!

Shelley (Ipswich):
A very enjoyable, open game. Both sides missed chances, and Darren Bent for us will be very unhappy that he missed so many. Darren Ambrose never got going today. My friend's nine-year-old son thought the Burnley mascots were very good - very acrobatic! All in all it was a good day out, and you could say that a draw was a fair result. Certainly I'll settle for 1-1!

Ady (Ipswich):
I was quite pleased when we started with Holland in defence, as playing an entire country there gave us a chance (boom boom!). Marshall marshalled the defence well, and Burnley had Little in midfield. Later on, Burnley offered Little out wide. Burnley's attack was improved the less we saw of Moore! Ipswich's shooting was as Bent as their strikers' names. The London Clarets are a nice bunch, and I can thoroughly recommend travelling with them, if only once a season!

We'd like to thank Shelley and Ady for contributing to our vox pop. Not sure about Ady's puns, though - terrible!

Poll of the day

We forgot all about it! We'll try to remember it next week!

Pic of the day

After the game, most people still look pretty much the same as they did during it. However, we've heard reports from Essex about a mutant deep sea diver / astronaut looming out of the dark and frightening the locals. Turns out to be boy racer Mr John Horrocks, all togged up and ready to burn rubber on his moped!

If you have any photos of London Clarets "off duty", please don't hesitate to send them in so that we can embarrass the individuals concerned. Best one wins a five-hour taxi ride with Nigel.
