Reading 3 Burnley 0, Tuesday 27th August 2002
Cureton closes on another inept performance

The statistics said...

We lost 3-0 to newly-promoted Reading. Reading's goals were as follows:
Cureton (55): easy front-of-goal shot after cross from right
Butler (87): counter-attack after our free kick
Cureton (90): super lob from distance over the hapless NTG

Our survey said...

We badgered our captive Clarets aboard the train almost speeding back to London and asked them all one single, simple question: Should we start getting worried?

Lee: Not yet, no. It’s still early doors. We’re not going up this year, and we’re not going down. Between them it doesn’t matter where we finish. It’s a consolidation season. Let’s not start on some kind of anti-Stan bandwagon.

Woody: No. Our first 11 is as good as anyone else’s, but our squad is no way up to standard. It’s essential that the first team is got back up to fitness and the players are played in the best positions.

I did all the beers in the Hop Leaf. That was without doubt the highlight of the day.

Joanne: Yes, definitely. We’ve scored one, with ten against, and the fact that Johnrose was our best player speaks volumes. We need to form a human wall to block the goal. Maybe we can organise a friendly against the reserves to get our confidence back.

John: Yes we should be worrying, because basically it’s the same team we had last season and it suddenly looks rubbish and short of confidence. We should expect more from the players out there.

Michael: Clearly, yes. The last two performances have got relegation written all over them. I’m not panicking, but I’m very concerned. The only encouraging thing in the last two games has been the performances of McGregor and Cox.

Roger: Yes. The manager has run out of ideas. He definitely has favourites. There are certain players he always plays and if you’re paying the salaries of other players why not give them a chance? I think Stan is finished. This reminds me of Jimmy Mullen.

Firmo: Yes. Something needs to change. The lack of confidence is horrendous. I don’t think Reading had better players than us but they did the basics. They made runs, passed forward and had shots. We didn’t, and as soon as they scored it was only a matter of waiting for the Third Goal. Players like Alan Moore and Robbie Blake should take a long hard look at themselves, but it’s the manager’s job to motivate them. We desperately need a proper goalie too.
