Sheffield Wednesday 1 Burnley 3, Saturday 5th October 2002 Octoberfest
The statistics said...
We won 3-1 away at Hillsborough to take our unbeaten run (League and League Cup) to 9 games. Goals were as follows:
Sheff Wed
Donnelly 67 (shot from around 20 yards)
Burnley
Taylor 8 (headed in Branch's pinpoint cross)
Little 57 (close-range shot from tight angle after superb interplay with Robbie Blake)
Ian Moore 60 (great finish from inside the area after manouevring the ball round the last defender).

After the match, we got quotes from some London Clarets.
Jules
A much improved performance, with some quality finishing. Improved battling in midfield, but a disappointing last twenty minutes when we were hanging on. The result is the important factor, though, and the unbeaten run carries on. And I can't be arsed to say anything else!
Paddy
I thought our finishing was good today, especially the second goal which was perfection itself. However, as is Stan's wont, we then proceeded to defend deep and invite pressure, and only Marlon's brilliance in goal kept the scoreline to a level that reflected Burnley's dominance.
Razor
Burnley's early brilliance was diluted by a desire to defend what we've got instead of going for more goals, leaving the fans with half an hour of torture to endure. However, this should take nothing away from a first hour of attacking brilliance, with Blake and Little to the fore. Half an hour at the end showed that we need to do all we can to ensure we keep Marlon Beresford on our books.
John
Things are getting better by the week! I managed to be on an away match - and see us win, and see us play well! Three good goals, but still hanging on after they'd scored theirs. Supreme Marlon at his best: my man of the match.
Nigel
Referee good; train service crap; Cup draw decent; brilliant performance by Marlon; should be home by 02:30! Editor's note: well, if you insist on living in Dover...
Barbara
A wise move to sign Marlon. What a top-class performance! After the "owling" start to the season, well done all the Clarets for a splendid day out. I could excite Marlon!
Pauline
Marlon will be joining me in the bedroom tonight, as usual. I have touched most of his body. I particularly love to stroke his furry belly. OK, Marlon is my cat. Named after you know who!
Joan
What a star Marlon is! A great performance all round. Keep playing the ball on the floor, and showing all those wonderful passing moves that will result in more goals for the Clarets.
Phil
A good all-round performance; very committed, and I felt we wanted it more than Wednesday. I think that the goals we scored today showed how good we are when Little and Blake are given the support and encouragement to attack and play to feet. It was a bit irritating to let Wednesday back in it in the last twenty-five minutes.
Doughnut
Very good all-round performance. Three excellent goals, but once again in the last twenty-five minutes we tried to lose the game for ourselves after being three goals up. But for an excellent performance by Marlon Beresford, we could have come away again with one point instead of three.
Paul
This train is useless. Regarding the game - our second goal was a Little-Blake passing movement that in previous seasons would have been Little-Weller. We don't use this tactic often enough, especially away from home.
Woody
This should be one of the greatest days of the year. We won 3-1 at Sheffield Wednesday, but it has been ruined by the shit toytown trains that we've had to deal with.
We controlled the game for sixty minutes, were by far the better side, and scored the goals to confirm our superiority. I thought Sheff Wed came back into it really bravely, and Marlon in the last half hour (together with Cox and Gnohere) was superb, which made it a real team victory.
Firmo
Today, we saw everything that's good and bad about Burnley. We have loads of talented players, and we're great at attacking. Defensively, we're sound. Nothing in the middle - but you can't have everything. That we have to play Steve Davis in midfield underlines the paucity of our resources.
Still, look on the bright side: we were the best team, and all our goals were lovely. Hats off to di Branchio for the pinpoint cross onto Taylor's bonce for the opener. Little and Blake combined beautifully for our second, and I'm still in shock about Ian Moore's goal!
And then, unfortunately, we declared. We stopped playing, and let Sheff Wed come at us. But that's Burnley - even at 3-0, you can't relax. They never make things easy for us. 3-1 up, and we're relying on the goalkeeper to keep us in the game. Fortunately, Marlon was absolutely sensational. I said early on in the season that we needed a proper goalkeeper - thank God we've got one. I doubt whether we would have won today with Nik in goal.
And Sheffield Wednesday are desperate. They're going down. I can't see how things are going to get better for them.
One final thought: if anything's spoilt today, it's been our rotten public transport. In this day and age, the way we've been messed about today is a joke. As I speak, we're on some kind of sprinter that stops at every one-horse town between Derby and London - even Market Harborough. Midland Mainline are rubbish. They are always late. This isn't what I voted for.
Pic of the day
In one of the pubs we visited en route, there was a beer called "Senseless Paddy". For some reason, this instantly made everyone think of one Mr Patrick O'Neill. The (somewhat bemused) bar staff kindly allowed Paddy to pose with his namesake!
