Walsall 3 Burnley 2, Saturday 15th March 2003
If the cap fits, wear it

The statistics said...

We lost (again), this time away at Walsall. Goals were as follows: (Walsall) Leitao 24, Carbon 33, Matias 66; (Burnley) Blake 74 (pen), Little 90. Evidently Glen's goal was a good one, although in the end it served only to keep our goal difference down. Blake's penalty came after Walsall keeper James Walker brought down Gareth Taylor in the area, for which he was red-carded. The "three-goal rule" (note: an optional gesture, and not official BFCLSC policy) was observed by several London Clarets after Walsall's third goal.

Our survey said...

Dermot:

I saw the whole game, unfortunately, but I did see a good goal at the end.

Razor:

I'm so, so, so sorry! I let you down again. It's a well-known fact that Burnley always win away when I get the pies in at half time. But once again, I was too tight to do it. Sorry, everyone!

Whitto:

I'm sorry, Stan. It was a good book, and we all know that you are a top manager, but you fucked it up today. All those Clarets who travelled to Walsall today should be given a refund. When will you realise that to get points, you have to WIN matches? There is no excuse for this capitulation. Today summed up everything that is bad about Burnley. We were a disgrace, and we deserved nothing.

Paddy:

Here was our season, on a knife-edge. Win, and we'd still be in the play-off picture; lose, and we'd be out of it. So you'd think we'd go for the win, yes? As if. Today was a piss-poor, ineffective, defeatist rollover. Walsall are crap, but our performance made them look like world-beaters. I'm just pleased that the third goal went in early, and we could catch the 16:32. I love Lancashire.

Firmo:

Today was disappointing. If we were serious about getting to the play-offs, we needed to win today, but instead we picked a defensive line-up. We got what we deserved. We let a poor team score soft goals against us.

Our reaction to defeat at Watford has been very disappointing. Some teams seem to respond well to a setback - not us. We deliver another series of setbacks.

It's been an interesting division this season, because it's seemed very open. Each week there's a shakedown, and teams drop out of the race. This week it was our turn to bow out. We needed to win, but we didn't. The season ended today.

Nigel:

Shite game; great goal from Little. Walsall sending-off fully deserved. Put Little and Blake in the starting line-up.

Joanne:

Poor tactics. Why is Alan Moore still in the team? I'd like to knee-cap him!

John:

Poor team selection, and an abysmal performance. Gutless, spineless, and clueless. If I ever see Alan Moore again it will be too soon.

Joan:

Another disappointing performance. If they don't buck up their ideas, we'll not reach fifty points. I want to see more commitment, and the team playing to its full potential. Come on you Clarets!

Katherine:

Two rubbish teams. We didn't want to know. Three balls went out of the ground over one stand, and one over another. Season's over.

Woody:

We picked the wrong team. It was a match we had to win, and we didn't do it.

Poll of the day

Like the team, we just didn't fancy it.

Pic of the day

After the game, Stan's comments included the saying "If the cap fits, wear it". There wasn't any real context to the remark, and we were a bit confused as to what he meant. Suddenly, light dawned.
