Wolves 3 Burnley 0, Saturday 17th August 2002 Winter Blunderland
The statistics said...
We lost 3-0 to promotion hopefuls Wolves. Wolves' goals were as follows: Blake 2 (Michopoulos howler), Irwin 49 (a free kick that wasn't, but a super strike nonetheless), Cooper 88 (inevitable).
Our survey said...
We put two questions to each of our guinea pigs:
Question 1: What did you think of today's performance?
Question 2: Could the Burnley Board be doing any more?
Firmo's responses:
Question 1
Better than last week's. It's impossible to tell how the game would have gone without Cook's sending off. Certainly in the first half we matched Wolves, and it could have been a real contest with eleven versus eleven. Jeff Winter is a terrible referee, and he got a bit over-excited today.
Question 2
No, they're doing a great job in the main. We're going to stay in the division, which is our mission.
Phil's responses:
Question 1
We put a lot of effort in, but had no cutting edge. I'm concerned about Stan playing players out of position. For example, McGregor at left back, Briscoe in midfield. Bringing Papa on was a good decision, though, as it provided someone to work alongside Taylor.
Question 2
No, they couldn't be doing any more. Stan's received bids for players, and the Board haven't forced him to sell. They want to keep the squad together, and will strengthen as and when possible.
Razor's responses:
Question 1
Poor, but heavily influenced by the referee. This, plus the very poor goalkeeping from NTG early on, suggested it would be a waste of time staying for the remainder of the game. As proved by further goalkeeping errors, despite a penalty save.
Question 2
Yes, they could be buying (or taking on loan) another goalkeeper, as the clown* we have in goal is not fit for Division One.
Whitto's responses:
Question 1
I felt that the performance wasn't bad, although it was hampered by inept refereeing and inept management. Stan Ternent needs to pay more attention to the positions his player play in. This is not a computer game.
Question 2
For twenty years, Burnley have had an attitude of "muddling through". This cost us dear last season, and it appears to me that the Board are maintaining the same attitude. They are unwilling to put their hands in their pockets to secure our First Division future, and are making us a laughing stock in the division.
Pic of the day
Before the game, we thought this might be an omen. Sadly, it wasn't.
