Burnley 2 Wolves 1, Thursday 26th December 2002
Keeping the Wolves from the door

The statistics said...

We beat Wolves (yes! at last!) 2-1 at the Turf. Gareth Taylor opened the scoring on 24 minutes with a close-range header. Dean West added another shortly afterwards with a deflected shot from distance. Wolves pulled one back late on via defender Paul Butler, but it wasn't enough, and the Clarets took all three points.

Our survey said...

Cozzo:
We were the best team from beginning to end. Total commitment. Superb performances from Taylor, Weller and McGregor. We deserved the win.

Becko:
We played really well. First half we were on top - and a superb goal by Taylor. We were hanging on at the end, but Ternent has the ability to turn it around after a couple of bad results.

Firmo:
We played really well, and thoroughly deserved our win. After Gillingham, it was great to see such spirit and commitment from the team. There were a number of excellent individual performances today, particularly from "Golden Bonce" and Paul Weller (with his cute little skullcap).

Wolves were poor; they were nasty and bitchy. I lost count of how many players I was supposed to boo. If they are promotion candidates, then this is a rotten division. On today's showing, Paul Ince should retire from football and take up a career in refereeing.

It's December 26th, it's Wolves, and we won. Merry Christmas, everyone!

Editor's note: after a clash of heads with Arthur, Weller sported a rather attractive coating of Vaseline on his head!

Woody:
A tremendous performance. I thought in the first half we attacked with brio, and Taylor was outstanding. Early in the second half, Weller and Grant were tremendous, and later on, when we started to run out of steam, Cox was outstanding. An excellent team performance. Merry Christmas. Buy "Stan The Man" - available from all good bookshops.

Paddy:
A superb team performance; no-one had a bad game. The first half in particular saw us completely dominant, with players such as Ince and Rae merely spectators as they were outplayed by the inspired duo of Weller and Grant. Taylor’s goal was a terrific move, and West’s goal was the result of an advantage played by the ref (he had to get something right). In the second half, we had to grind out the result as Wolves threw everything at us. Cox was supreme at the back. Good to see him back playing like this. Will the real Burnley team please stand up?

John:
But...
...we don't play at home on Boxing Day, do we?
...we don't beat Wolves, do we?
Hang on - maybe we do! A splendid result. Happy Christmas from Goldilocks and the Three Bears.

You already know by now...John (or "Goldilocks", as he likes to be called - yes, this is worrying) buys a bear after each home defeat. Seems the next bear will have to stay in the Club Shop a while!

Poll of the day

How it works: Our Chairman highlights a key issue from the day, and each London Claret present at the post-match inquest casts one vote. Today's poll saw 15 votes cast.

The question: In light of their team's questionable antics, who was the most detestable Wolves player?

The result: The same two names cropped up again and again. For a wholehearted refereeing performance, no doubt nurtured at the "Theatre of Dreams", Mr Paul Ince scored a respectable 6. The clear winner, though, for a stunning display of carefully-choreographed diving and fouling, was Mr Mark Kennedy, with a very impressive 9.

Pic of the day

How nice to be able to take a picture of some happy Clarets! Not sure why Lee has two heads, though. Looks like he borrowed the other one from Paul...
