Cardiff 2 Burnley 0

Travel sick

The statistics said...

We lost 2-0 to Cardiff at Ninian Park. The score was 0-0 until the 78th minute, when the referee decided that Mark McGregor had fouled Bluebirds sub Andy Campbell, and awarded a penalty. The spot-kick was duly despatched by midfielder Richard Langley. Only two minutes later, the home side went 2-0 up as Campbell turned in Man of the Match John Robinson's cross. The Clarets couldn't come back, and another defeat was added to the list.

We had a little good fortune with results elsewhere, with Gillingham and Walsall both losing. With Franchise and Bradford both relegated, Gillingham now occupy the third relegation spot. Burnley are one place above, on goal difference (albeit with a game in hand). To avoid a nail-biting end to the season, we must now look to win against both Franchise and Derby.

Editor's note: sorry, no Woody pic today. He was at Yeovil 2 Bury 1 (ticking Huish Park)!

Lee W:

A poor performance, but at least it wasn't as bad as against Watford. I'm afraid my optimism is diminishing.

Barbara:

Just ten minutes to go, and foolishly I thought that a 0-0 draw was on the cards - how wrong could I be? Again a penalty was given away, and we lost heart... Maybe a win in the next match?

Alan*:

Although willing to concede defeat to Burnley (my second team), unfortunately it was not to be. Although the game was fizzling out as a 0-0 draw, Cardiff were awarded a dubious penalty, which - for once - was finished off in the 78th minute. This gave them great heart, and we finished the game off with a second.

*Editor's note: Alan (a friend of Barbara) is a Cardiff fan - probably the nicest one you'll ever meet!

Simon:

Stood on the home end terraces, I invoked the 'ten minutes to go, two down' rule. I was told that the train back was 20:25, when it was actually 18:25 (thanks, Lee, for putting me straight).

It looked like a certain 0-0. Just heard that Gills and Walsall lost, so all is not lost. The game? Let's not go there.

Phil:

Burnley competed well; they fought in midfield, and neutralised the threat of Earnshaw. The penalty decision was highly questionable and turned the game, which until then looked a 0-0. 80 minutes of hard graft wiped out with one decision.

Tim:

With M&M at the back, we were in with a shout; but with Blake and Little, we needed extra finishing.

Pauline:

We started really well - Branchy playing up front in place of Ian Moore - and could have been 1-0 up early on but for a great save by Margetson from a Robbie Blake shot. Then Cardiff came back into it, but we were defending well and it looked like a point might be on the cards. Cardiff bringing on Andy Campbell changed the game, though, as he was a real handful. So much for worrying about Earnshaw.

Can't comment on the penalty, as I was sitting at the front and looking through the net. Overall, though, we played quite well. Hopefully this will give them heart for Tuesday's match against Franchise, which is now the season's pivotal game.

The only bright spot in an otherwise mediocre day was that a friendly ticket inspector at Cardiff station let us catch an earlier train back to London - we were supposed to hang around until twenty-five past eight, but he took pity on us. We must have looked pretty depressed.
