Mansfield Town 0 Burnley 2

Staggered

The statistics said...

We beat Mansfield Town 2-0 at Field Mill in the FA Cup Third Round. Both goals came from Ian Moore, one in each half. The first, on the half-hour mark, was a header from a Jay McEveley cross. The second, on 73 minutes, was a close-range finish after Stags keeper Kevin Pilkington failed to deal effectively with a Robbie Blake free kick.

The game saw plenty of controversy. Two Mansfield players were sent off: Jamie Clarke on 40 minutes, for elbowing The Beast in the face; and Luke Dimech in the 71st minute, for bringing down Moore when the last defender - our second goal came from the resulting free kick. For Burnley, Richard Chaplow was sent off in the 75th minute following two yellow cards - the second for kicking the ball away, which surely won't have pleased Stan Ternent.

Disappointingly, the game also saw McEveley (playing very well in a new-look defence alongside May, McGregor and Roche) stretchered off with a dislocated kneecap. He will be out of action for around 10-12 weeks, and we wish him a speedy recovery.

Woody?:

A well-deserved victory earned us a vital place in the Fourth Round. Blake and Ian Moore were outstanding and a constant thorn in Mansfield's side, whilst the midfield and defence were sound.

The changes in defence made by Stan, whilst welcome, will surely be tested further in the First Division. Sad to see McEveley injured after finally getting his chance. Certainly sadder to see Camara on the pitch, who in comparison showed what an awful player he is.

Further proving, in fact, that if he is a First Division left back, I am riding through the glen (i.e. Robin Hood - after all, we were in "Robin Hood Country")!

Nigel:

Blake superb. Half-decent referee. Now need a good draw to rake in the money. Everton away would suit Sir Wood. Ian Moore Moore Moore!

Joanne:

Great to win, and win away. (Even though it was against Third Division opposition.) I thought that Mansfield tried to play football, though we never looked like losing. Very pleased to see a change in the defensive line-up, and I really think McGregor should be given a longer run in the team. His pointing alone should earn him a place versus Crystal Palace.

John P:

A fairly satisfying win after a series of abject performances. We should have killed them off in the first half on chances created. Richard Chaplow is a stupid boy! Mansfield is still a shit-hole, with ugly and backward locals!

Dermot:

It was a difficult game, marred by some awful decisions by the officials. Three players sent off and numerous bookings. We came through, winning 2-0; and, most importantly, keeping a clean sheet.

Barbara:

Yippee! An away win! Well done, Clarets. Unfortunately, McEveley's injury looked serious - pity, as he was making an excellent contribution to the game. Just our luck. However, we're in the hat for the next round. Arsenal at Turf Moor... dream on.

John H:

Didn't go*.

*Editor's note: yep, Hozzo travelled all the way to Nottingham with us... and then went to see Obscure Non-League Team 1 versus Obscure Non-League Team 2 in the Obscure League. Boo!

Lee:

A good, workmanlike performance, deserving of victory. Hoping for a decent draw in Round Four.

Firmo:

Wahey! A win! I was there! I saw it! Brilliant! I love the FA Cup!

Paddy:

Can someone please tell Ian Moore that every game we play is an FA Cup game? He seems to excel in this competition. He and Blake cut through Mansfield at will, and we should have had the game won by half time.

Hopefully we'll land a plum tie in the next round, but I bet we'll get someone like Sheffield United or Gillingham.

Poll of the day

Another key question exercises the minds of the London Clarets: How do you prefer your eggs cooked?

Responses:

Boiled: 3

Poached: 5

Scrambled: 12

Fried: 12

And this proves...? Well, presumably that we eschew the healthy in favour of what's bad for the heart. Hey, we wouldn't be following Burnley otherwise, would we?!

Pic of the day

Spotted near the ground: someone should tell "Nottinghamshire County Council Environment" that it's now January 2004. Any wonder Mansfield played like they didn't know what week it was!
