You gotta have faith
The statistics said...
We
lost 2-0 at home to newly-promoted Wigan Athletic
(their first ever Division One win - you can
always rely on Burnley to help another
team set some record or other).
Wigan's
first goal came after 13 minutes. Midfielder
Peter Kennedy was unmarked on the left, around
twenty yards out. He had time and space to advance
on goal, pick his spot and slot the ball past Jensen.
In
the second half, Burnley had a great chance to
equalise when Paul
Weller was unmarked a few yards out from goal,
but he
shot straight at ex Bastards keeper John Filan.
The
Latics went 2-0 up in the 77th minute, when
substitute Nathan Ellington scored
from a corner.
After
the game, Stan urged supporters
to "keep
the faith". Sorry, Stan, but we're rapidly
becoming atheists.

Joe:
I used to think that listening to the commentary over
the internet was nerve-racking, but being there
is ten times worse.
The defence
was very bad. May was too often pulled out of position
trying to cover for Branch and West.
Joe
was over from Malta, where he lives. He was looking
forward to his visit to the Turf. A shame the team
couldn't give him something to smile about. Still,
there's always Gillingham...
:
Too pissed off to make a comment, other than: if Branch
is a central defender, then I am Clive of India.
Dermot:
Very disappointing, especially after last week's game.
We started badly, finished the first half badly,
started the second half badly. We then started
to look good, but finished the game as we started.
But looking
at the squad on the back of the programme, we have
no complaints at the result. It will be a long,
hard season.
Paddy:
A fair result. Wigan came with a game plan, and implemented
it effectively. Apart from Weller's chance, we
never really looked like scoring. It looks
like it's going to be a tough season.
Firmo:
Work commitments caused me to miss the first two
weeks of the season, so this was my first chance
to see us since pre-season. I'm now worried.
As things stand, I can see relegation.
It
isn't just that we're lacking an adequate squad;
we're
missing core players in all areas. We don't
have a spine. We need a central defender, and at
least
one central midfielder. It's clear that Branch
can't play in central defence. Up front, we're
missing Taylor. We should have brought in a
target man on loan to fill the gap, rather than
make
do. That was a mistake. Without changes, it's
hard to see three sides finishing below us.
On
the plus side, I'd not seen Chadwick before and
he looked a good player. But generally, I feel
gloomy.
Joan:
Very disappointing again. Why don't they try shooting
at the goal? We might score. I'll be at Gillingham
on Monday - WHY?
Brent:
This club has become an absolute laughing stock.
We lost today because we had neither the passion
nor the will to win.
Wigan
were mediocre, but they knew that we are a one-trick
pony (please see my upcoming match report). I am
NOT happy. Gillingham is a no-go; I will not waste
my money on that total shit.
Bye-bye,
Stan: you have lost it. Go now, while people still
have affection
for you. You have lost the plot completely. No
money, Stanley? Neither has the rest of the League.
Goodbye Preston, hello Port Vale.
Pic of the day
A
very unusual
sight: a London
Claret holding something other than a pint glass!
What's even more strange is that Becko's
beer seems to have Pete's head floating in it.
(Of course,
this could just be our photographer's lack of technique.)
And
whilst we're on the subject of Pete, he - plus
his body, hopefully - will be competing
later this week in TV quiz show "Fifteen to One".
That is, the programme will be filmed
- we're not sure yet when it will be broadcast.
Disproving
the widely-held view that all football supporters
are stupid, Pete
is a former winner of the "Brain of Britain"
competition. We wish him luck in "Fifteen to One".
Come on you Claret!
